Hi guys! I know this blog has been dead for more than a year now. Haven't seen any of you in ages! I didn't think anyone visit here anymore but i met anura and hardip last month and they were telling me how dead our blog is. I know everyone's been insanely busy with whatever you're doing. and i'm hoping everything's panning out well.

I know facebook generally keeps everyone aware of each others' whereabouts but here's a shoutout to anyone who happen to stumble back here on a slow and unindustrious day. What exactly are you up to now? Have you graduated? If not how long more? And most importantly where on the map are you haha. Because its been too long and i'm still as clueless.

Ireland Trip (19/12-23/12) report Day 1

Anura, Kavitha and I flew in to Dublin from Stansted and met up with Adrian who flew from Manchester. So the weather appeared to be worse than in England – gloomy skies and strong winds which almost blew all of us away. After leaving our luggage at Barnacles (which btw was quite a rip-off IMHO), we headed to Dublin ‘castle’ but our timing wasn’t right and the tour has already started so we moved on to Christ’s Church Cathedral instead. Met Yiu Ti and Pal outside afterwards and we went for lunch somewhere in Temple Bar. Gosh, stuff in Ireland is so much more expensive compared to France and the UK (although Adrian did manage to find the cheapest Chuppa Chups ever!). And the euro has just decided to do a ‘1 for 1’ with the pound.

Next stop was probably the highlight of our stay in Ireland – the Guinness Storehouse. This place was amazing, and Guinness did taste slightly different here. There was chat about me opening up my own brewery soon as well, we’ll see… Pal and Yiu Ti accompanied us to Old Jameson Distillery where we continued our boozing while they went home.

Now the next destination was truly weird. Who would have Bram Stoker’s Dracula experience in a health club? We probably had to pass through the health club, a bar, some people playing pool and a rather odd looking receptionist to get there. Did you know that Bram Stoker’s wife was going out with Oscar Wilde at some point? And that Bram actually knew people like Tennyson, Arthur Conan Doyle, etc? I wonder if Kavitha still remembers his address…

It was raining by the time we got out of that place. After a quick dinner, we took the bus back to Barnacles and called it a night. So much for Purty kitchen!

I hope all of you are well, wherever you may be, I just want to create awareness regarding Malaysia's turtle species. If we don't do something about it, they might face extinction.

Please have a look at the petition and sign it if you are keen on helping them. I don't think any of you eat turtle eggs anyway, but it would be great if you could sign it, so that we can urge the state government to enforce the laws on turtle egg poaching.

yes, it's been 3 months since i came back. it was great meeting up with some of you. a full reunion didn't seem very likely, but hopefully we'll sort that one out for next year.

Hmm, this is my 1st time posting something here, coz I'm noob enough to realize i CAN actually post something here, until sometime ago. :p Well, dont laugh at me larr(Hey you, yes YOU! i know u'r cursing me!!!) lol...
Well, joonheng, i was really planning to go to imu and meet up with u all last december/january. but it was raining sooo heavily at the east coast, everyday! so, luckily i dint go, coz i'll then get stuck in subang/imu for the rest of the week, coz the east coast highway got flooded! n i wonder how on earth a newly-built highway can get flooded so easily... Anyway, i promise i'll visit u guys end of this year.

Ahh, so now I'm back in Brisbane for about 2 months now. New course, new coursemates, and i'm glad i can mix well with them. I posted some of their pictures in my blog, so feel free to visit ok?! http://www.wretch.cc/blog/spyro . And dont forget to leave some nice comment ok! lol... Ohh yeah, for those who like Secret by Jay Chou, I'v posted couple of video clips in my 1st post, so, hope u all will enjoy.
Brissy is getting cold, n winter is coming. Weird, this year is not as hot as last year. lots of showers, and getting cold since the very start of april. last year raining was so rare b4 winter, until water restriction increased to level 6. ZzzZ...

heh. okayla, I will also stop being malas and update.

over here the holidays have just flown by (as they always do...). it's been snowing - in APRIL. O.o Aberdeen is so cool right? XD Meanwhile, the new batch of IMUers just arrived sometime last week... some of us went to meet them and take them out when they came and all that. showed them where Morrisons and the chinese supermarket is... got them phone simcards, etc. they seem quite nice, this batch of ppl - they'll be in the year above me. :) apart from that leh... I'll be in glasgow this weekend visiting a friend... and lectures start again on monday. Neuro sounds scary. lol. not much else, i guess... except that I have a housemate who acts like James Bond - everything he does is top secret and cannot tell ppl one. *EVERYTHING*. but that's just a pet peeve, so just ignore me... ^^

well.. its been a refreshing one month break for me here. its time to go back to uni. im actually kind of looking forward to it loh.
coz now right, imu has built a futsal and basketball court next to the campus. so everyday i will PLAY!! syokkkkkkk. hehehe

its been an unfruitful month. lazing around but thats what semester break is all about no?

william actually called me when he came down and asked whether he could stay at my place but i really didnt get the message =s and now he refuses to acknowledge my existence. haha sorry sorry!!! but i really didnt get your message william.

wei jien on the other hand kept msging me to ask to meet up. bout 5-6 times. in the end when i clean my vista apartment d, he msg me say he cannot come and on his way back to australia. LOL.

hey everyone! how is everybody? hope u're all doin well.. n no ryan, i refuse to believe that this blog is dyin! how could u even suggest it? (traitor to the cause!) n yi lun i completely agree with your take on the bloody UK weather.. for cryin out loud, yesterday it tiba-tiba started snowin! in november! weird.. thank god it was sunday n i didn't hafta go out.. :P
anyway, the topic of the moment is it's notts m'sian games again! (yey!) on dec 1st! so UK ppl pls try n come.. i'll b a bit busy cuz apparently i'm playin netball (it's 'apparently' cuz i'm still not sure cuz i m quite shit at d game so they might just decide to kick me out.. hehe!) nyway, u guys should just come for d great malaysian food which u know u miss! n v can haf a pm1 together-getherness gatherin in d UK!! u can come c my place too.. i would offer to put u all up but i dont think there's dat much space.. mebbe d gals only? :) i'm not tryin to b discriminatory btw.. cant help it! it's not my fault! the bitter cold

The weather here is insanely erratic, one minute it's warm-ish, the next it's as cold as Satan's heart. Today is one of those extremely cold days. It's so cold that the only thing you feel like doing is snuggle under the duvet with the radiator on full blast. Alas, that would only happen in an ideal world. In the real world, however, which I sometimes call hell, the radiator is down and you're stuck at your desk 'conveniently' placed by the window, rushing to meet your deadlines.

Yes, we do like to talk about the weather here. This is a very random post, but at least it prevents the blog from dying. Dear anyone who's reading this, post something next week :p.

Okay since I was the one who made the comment I guess I should contribute too...

Cambs has been... oddly less stressful than last year. 2nd year medicine is supposed to be the busiest, most stressful course here, but for some reason I'm finding it less of a hassle than last year. Hmm either it's because I'm used to the stuff now, or maybe I just don't care as much whether or not my supervisors like my essays haha...

Hmm nothing much else to add really... I'm staying over for christmas... hey UK ppl maybe you could visit me then if you're staying back too =)

The really sien thing right now is the fact that the sun is setting earlier and earlier. Lol you'd have thought I'd be used to it by this year, but every time I look out at like 4.30 pm and see that its 10pm-sort-of-dark I start getting grumpy haha...

In which case I should start reading up on patho before I run out of daylight... =P

yeah. so wats new here? nothing much except that im thinking of going to watch the demonstration in dataran merdeka this saturday. im not going to join of course. haha dun want to get myself caught now do i.. will sit in my car and watch.

what demonstration? its basically a 'perhimpunan' of all the opposition parties and charity bodies at dataran merdeka all the way to the istana to demand a clean and fair General Election.
by law we have every right to do so, but UMNO youths are idiots and the deputy head Khairy JAmaluddin is an even bigger idiot by demanding that every person attending the demonstration to be put in jail. i want to see how the jail can fit 10000 people. hahahahaha.

Yiu Ti's progress

Hey guys,

I have been exchanging emails with Kavitha about Yiu Ti's current medical condition. Here is what she had to say :

Hi Danis,

I'm fine thanks. And you? I hope you're keeping alright.

Yes, unfortunately the news is true. She has some how contracted viral Encephalitis. She is not well at all. I spoke to both her sister and her mum yesterday night. Her mother sounded really depressed and devastated. We're all hoping and praying for the best. She was first admitted in a hospital in Derby on the 14th of July. After the doctors there came to an agreement that they could no longer help her in any way, she was transferred to the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London. She is currently being treated there. Her condition is improving. Before yesterday she could not breathe on her own. She was ventilated and had a tracheotomy done. But thankfully as of yesterday, she is now able to breathe on her own. Also, the inflammation in her forebrain has gone down to about 30% now. I do believe she is out of the woods. She lapses in and out of consciousness. She sometimes is unable to recognise people. I think this is due to the drugs and the sedation effect of the medication. I will be visiting her later today afternoon. Hopefully then I can let you guys know more about her condition then. I haven't checked yet, but have you or Joon updated our blog? The sad part of this is that it has been 2 months and noone knew.

I've just come back from the hospital. Yiu Ti is definitely improving. She is able to respond a little to our voices and touch, which is very good. She can't focus long on one particular thing but according to her mum and dad she was able to (very faintly) call out 'mama' and 'papa' today morning. So slowly but surely, she is getting better. Whether or not she will regain her memory, speech etc the doctors aren't sure yet. A speech therapist sees her regularly. SHe's just taking it one day at a time. I reckon she will still be in the hospital then. The name of the hospital is the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. I'm sure your dad and your sister are familiar with the undergroud. So the nearest stop is Russel Square on the Piccadily line. Once you exit the station, turn left. There should be signs from there guiding you to the hospital from there. (Basically: out the station turn left. then first left again. walk down. and take a left again. keep walking and should see it on your right) Once you get to the hospital, ask for the Harris Medical Centre ITU on the first floor. Just ask the nurses for Yiu Ti at the ITU.

hey everyone..
ok this is just an update bout what i know bout yiu ti's situation.. cuz i felt that everyone should know so v can show our support in some way or another..
she's been in the hospital for about 2 months now in uk. after she came back from her holiday to US, she fell sick n was eventually admitted to a hospital in nottingham (cuz her sis lives near there), recently she was transferred to a hospital in london. she has a viral disease called viral encephalitis. i don't know much about the disease but apparently it's very rare n so it took a long time for her diagnosis.
this info all came from her sister whom kavitha called. yiu ti's family is still here with her in london and they're all very positive about her condition.
ppl in uk, if you're plannin to go down to london anytime soon or if u wanna go just to visit her or anythin, call kavitha to find out the hospital she's in. i might b goin to london on the 7th so if anyone else wants to come then just call.

hey ppl! hope loads of u r back in kl cuz next wednesday (15 aug) we wanna go visit ms annie at her house n see her baby n her 'boyfren'
so far the plan is to be at her house (in kota kemuning, shah alam) at 5 pm. means everyone who's drivin (pls reply if u can drive then v can see if cukup tempat or not) n those who're not drivin all meet at taylors at 4 (i think) n then everyone go together-gether to her place..
i think kavitha knows how to get to kota kemuning n from there ms annie can direct us to her house.. n after v go makan k? dunno if ms annie will join us for dat or not but either way i wanna makan!
wat else.. hmm... present! does everyone agree to contribute rm 5 towards a prezzie? i hope 5 ringgit is enough if it isnt then v'll collect more.. :P

with great expectation comes great dissapointment. isnt that always the case? hyped by the venom inclusion in spiderman 3, i for one was ready for the start of the great venom vs spidey saga. not only was there only one serious clash between spidey and venom, VENOM WAS KILLED IN THE END! oh god....

for the non-spidey comic fans, the end of venom and harry osborne means that

1) THERE WILL BE NO CARNAGE! arghhhh... this director obviously has not read comics before. eddie brock was supposed to go to jail where he meets cletus kasady. there the symbiote finds him and the symbiote leaves an offspring(carnage) which bonds with kasady.

its been too long. too long. since ive post something up here.

havent heard from ANY of you (apart from imu ppl) for a LONG time. some have lost their passwords( @_@).

anyway this post is for ALL (ALL means everyone) of US to fill the rest with what u r currently doing. ill go 1st.

JOON HENG.
- still in imu.
- joined debate club lately. had 1st debate last thursday. topic was should UN intervene with genocides. we were the opposition. was 3rd speaker.
-running for post in editorial board.
-exams coming in 5 days. summative 2. must do well . din do well last summative. i hope ive done enough to do well this time.
-ive moved in to vista. no more living in subang. vista c2-2-6. i live 6 floors below ken.
-ran into abel few times since he came to imu. he lives in vista B. underground. his room is opposite the swimming pool. where he has nice 'scenery' each evening assuming it doesnt rain.
-still healthy. din go church for 1 month plus. went back last week. going again tomorrow.
-still as idiotic as ever. getting along well in vista. haha. i have multiple crushes. my frens as usual cannot be trusted to keep a secret.
-lost a fren coz his stpm results was not good enough to enter imu. =(
-nothing much happening in these few months. officially quit dota. spend last few weeks in the vicinity of the imu library nerding out.

Hey guys, how have you all been? I'm writing to urge you guys to come to our malaysian night!!! I can assure you that it's worth it to be there, :) loads of hard work have been put in for this night.

Date:24 February 2007
Time: 7.00pm
Venue: Wolfson Hall, Churchill College

Here's the sypnosis:-
It’s Malaysia Night once again, and the Cambridge University Malaysia Society Committee this year is staging a grand reworking of “Romeo and Juliet.” Two hours before the curtains are raised, everything is in pieces – not least the entire team staging the play.

The most repulsive thing ever seen to (wo)mankind plays Juliet, an understudy pines for the handsome but mentally-challenged jock, and the club president plots to sabotage the show in the name of the country. Also, a set of twins create wayang kulit war, Romeo can’t seem to remember any of his lines at all, and a very confused Fairy Godmother happens to crash the practice.

Will there be resolve, or will the whole night go down in flames? A winning show must be fashioned in two hours, from a group of mismatched troublemakers no less.

In an absurdly (and also purely) Malaysian fashion, The Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet combines screwball comedy, melodrama, Manglish and a lot of nasty people in close contact with each other.

It is also expected to win the Tony Award this year.

Reasons why I think you should go:-
1. William Tan Kang Hock will be dancing!!!(with a girl), it's a really nice dance, a fusion of contemp, ballroom, salsa and so much more!!
2. We PM1ers who are scattered around UK can get a reunion we so deserve.
3.It's a good opportunity to visit Cambridge.
4. The play is witty and entertaining, it's not the real romeo and juliet which might sing you to sleep.
5. For guys, girl catfight is involved!!
6. I can book the tickets for you.
7. Tsk tsk...Jimmy Choo might attend our Malaysian Night.
8. I've been working my arse off for weeks as the assistant and I hope people will come and support :)

We’re already seeing changes. Glaciers are melting, plants and animals are being forced from their habitat, and the number of severe storms and droughts is increasing.

The number of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes has almost doubled in the last 30 years.
Malaria has spread to higher altitudes in places like the Colombian Andes, 7,000 feet above sea level.

The flow of ice from glaciers in Greenland has more than doubled over the past decade.
At least 279 species of plants and animals are already responding to global warming, moving closer to the poles.

If the warming continues, we can expect catastrophic consequences.

Deaths from global warming will double in just 25 years -- to 300,000 people a year.

omg.... today has been reli reli reli bad for me. kind of like waking up on the wrong side of the bed la. when i woke up this morning, my HANDPHONE was not working. cannot on. swt... no wonder no alarm...

ok.. nvm.. i supposed to go mac centre to collect the 15 photostated copies of immunology book. usually no jam. but today dunno y damn fuked up JAM ALL the way from summit to the ss15 roundabout. ended up i didnt collect my books and i was fuking LATE for lab. luckily not csu coz tat day also i late for csu and kena CHAR-ED by the doctor.

nvm...then there is this ping pong tournament intra sem 1. me and cheng yee join. i had to concede a WALKOVER to my opponent yesterday coz today he had prayers..but yesterday the organiser said my match was today.... mahiiiiiii.....special mention: cy won 3rd.

nvm... i tot.. wat could get worse rite? i walk to my car.. i put my books down. GUESS WAT? i turn the key... WTF! CANNOT START LA!! T_T ....... my BATTERY DEAD!!!!

here's something from me.... to those of u out there overseas living independently... doing ur own laundry....

u know how when u do laundry u separate ur whites from ur darks... (well atleast its better to do that.. i dont if i feel lazy....) but when u do.. dont u find like u have too little whites OR too little darks.. and u feel like ur wasting alot of money for that extra washing machine for, just say, 5 pieces of whites.... wasteful..... so wouldnt u wanna do sumting bout it... like have one week u wear all white shirts, one week all colour... then u just do one wash after each week... UNLESS... u wait til u wear ur WHOLE wardrobe before u do ur laundry...!!?? bwahaha.. thats crazy... and it only works if u have enuff undies...

speaking of undies... u should always wear light coloured ones first... then dark... so when u realise u've run out of undies u would be wearing a dark one and that could last for another day or two before u find time to do ur laundry... smart eh??? i wouldnt go to the extent to turn it inside out and wear them... i mean... inside out or not.. if dirty still got smell.... :P hahaha...

i know i know... i disgust myself sometimes too..... too much time to ponder...

KUALA LUMPUR: Flying to the United Kingdom is set to become cheaper. Just RM9.99 for a single journey, to be precise.

Come July, this will be one of several medium and long-haul flights to be offered by AirAsia X, and Fly Asian Xpress’ (FAX) budget long-haul service.

The budget route will not be serving Heathrow Airport but secondary airports such as Stanstead, Manchester, Coventry and Birmingham.

Even without the gimmick, flying to the United Kingdom — the longest international low-cost carrier (LCC) route — is going to become very much cheaper via AirAsia X.

The real deal is this: Normal flights will be going at half the price offered by full services airlines.

The newest development in flights out of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, it is set to provide stiff competition to more established airlines flying the route.

FAX chief executive officer Raja Azmi Raja Razali said the fare excluded food, beverages and in-flight entertainment.

"Our new service will revolutionise Malaysia’s aviation sector and pave the way to making the KLIA the global hub for LCC," he told reporters after the launch of AirAsia X and the signing of a 30-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between AirAsia and FAX here.

The agreement allows AirAsia to franchise its internationally recognised brand to FAX.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy and Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor launched AirAsia X yesterday.

Other AirAsia X destinations in the pipeline include Tianjin and Hangzhou in China, India, Australia and several destinations in Europe.

AirAsia X is expected to carry about 500,000 passengers within the first year of operations.

Tickets will be on sale through AirAsia’s website next month.

FAX, privately-owned by AirAsia chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes, AirAsia deputy CEO Datuk Kamarudin Meranun and Raja Azmi, operates the domestic rural air services (RAS) in Sabah and Sarawak.

Fernandes owns a 50 per cent stake in FAX, while Kamarudin and Raja Azmi own 30 and 20 per cent stakes in the airline respectively.

Fernandes said FAX was looking for suitable wide-bodied aircraft to lease or purchase, like the B777s or A330s.

To start off, he said the airline would need around three such aircraft for the long-haul routes.

"I think FAX would need around 20 aircraft to serve our medium and long- haul destinations. The proposed aircraft purchase would be financed by shareholder funds," he said.

Depending on the type of aircraft used, the Kuala Lumpur-London flight service would most likely have a stop-over in the Middle East.

The service would have two seat classes — economy and super economy, which is almost equivalent to full service business class seats.

speaking of good food.. did u know that if u microwave a preapared meal that says "use oven only!" u get the chicken really really soft?? it says on the cover crispy chicken in sweet sour sauce... but i didnt have an oven.. so i used microwave.. and it came out mash chicken in sweet sour.. if u try putting a spoon in it.. it becomes soft and squishy... mash chicken... it tasted good!! but was hoping for something crispy...

which comes back to my point that im sick of microwave food.... lets go market... heavenly food in hell at dirt cheap price...

New rules to work in Britain

LONDON: Malaysian professionals must possess a British degree and speak good English under new rules to work in Britain, effective Dec 5.

The move will affect mostly doctors, lawyers, accountants, engineers and entrepreneurs under the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP).

Westminster City Council Chinese Liaison Officer David Tan said the revised regulations would supersede the old criteria which was scrapped on Nov 7.

Until then, all decision-making on cases in this category has been suspended, he said in response to Malaysians showing an increasing interest in applying to work in Britain under the HSMP.

Tan said the decision was made during his recent meeting with British Home Office officials where they discussed several measures to restrict the number of non-European Economic Area nationals coming to Britain.

With more than 100,000 Romanians and Bulgarians expected to flood into Britain next year apart from the estimated 200,000 Poles already in the country, the British government is increasingly tightening its regulations in a bid to check the massive flow of immigrants.

Tan said, however, HSMP applications received up to Nov 7 would still be dealt with and considered against the old criteria.

Furthermore, anyone already in receipt of the HSMP approval letter could still apply for entry clearance at a visa post for up to six months from the letter's issuance date.

He said in the past, HSMP applicants could still be entertained if they had university degrees from outside Britain.

“But now, you’ve got to have a British degree or MBA from a designated institution such as those from the United States or Germany,” he added.

Tan said there was also a mandatory English language requirement, where applicants need to have an International English Language Teaching System certificate.

“You must be able to speak English properly before you can practice as a doctor, dentist, accountant or lawyer,” he said.

Tan said the redesigned HSMP scheme would be the first part of a five-tiered points based system for all future migration routes to Britain to work or to study.

The full system, scheduled to be in place by April 2009, covers five tiers.

Tier One is for highly skilled individuals who contribute to growth and productivity; Tier Two for skilled workers with a job offer and workers to meet specific overseas requirements; Tier Three is for limited number of workers to fill low-skill shortages; Tier Four for students aimed at improving British education and research and Tier Five covering temporary categories such as visiting workers, selected development schemes and youth mobility/cultural exchange programmes.

Tan advised Malaysian chefs or those in the catering and food businesses who planned to work in Britain under Tier Two to submit their applications well before April 2009.

“My message is simple, you have up to two years' grace to find a potential employer in Britain who can sponsor and apply for a work permit for you under the present rules,” he said.

He feared the new earnings rule would effectively exclude potential applicants as it might require them to have a minimum starting salary of £18,000 (RM122,000) per year in their home country.

In an average Malaysian restaurant, no matter how skilled or experienced the chef is, I doubt many are able to command that level of pay, he said.

He said even top chefs working in five-star hotels in Malaysia would probably earn only RM4,000 or RM5,000 a month.

Tan said the tough work permit rules would have a huge impact on British restaurant and food scene, as fewer successful entrants would cause a staff shortage as more earlier generation of chefs retire or give up for health or family reasons.

“Under the new system, unless you can demonstrate a very high level of skills, plus academic qualifications which will serve to benefit Britain in the long term, you are unlikely to get anywhere,” he added.

DATUK Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein’s face is deeply tanned after a short break in Pangkor with the family where he caught “the biggest fish of my life.”

When he saw the sceptical faces around him, he did not stretch his arms wide as is the case in most stories about a catch from the sea but held them apart at a realistic chest width.

The weeks leading to the party general assembly had been stressful for the Umno Youth chief.

“It is such an important forum for Umno and my speech before the Youth wing is always my most important in the year,” he said.

He had walked into his office in a cornflower blue baju Melayu in preparation for Friday prayers later on. As he went past a painting of a pair of keris, he joked: “Baju Melayu also cannot, is it? Okay, okay, take down this painting (of the keris).”

Inside his Education Minister’s room, his aides joked that he had better remove a massive tongkat ali root – a gift from a supporter – sitting on the side cabinet since it resembled the keris.

It has been a week since the assembly but public disquiet over the content and the tone of the debate has yet to dissipate.

The 45-year-old son of a former prime minister has come across as rather “ultra” to some but in person, he is erudite, sophisticated and, hard as it may be for his detractors to believe, rather reasonable.

In the interview with JOCELINE TAN, he argued why it was necessary to allow the Umno grassroots to release their fears and uneasiness in the controlled environment of the assembly rather than let it get out of hand elsewhere. He defended the keris as a Malay cultural symbol and spoke about the impact of the assembly on race relations and ties with the other Barisan Nasional component parties.

Q. This general assembly saw the Malay Agenda come out stronger than in previous years.

A. Two questions I get everywhere I go – why more so this year, and why I did what I did. Any leader in a complex society like Malaysia has to feel the pulse of the constituency. It’s like what one of the delegates said about the duck swimming in calm waters but paddling like mad to stay afloat. It’s the same with ensuring stability – it requires a lot of work that is not seen, there’s all this furious paddling beneath the water surface.

What happened this year was because issues raised in the past year or so have created resentment, frustration. I could feel the Malays were very restless over issues like the Lina Joy and apostasy case, the IFC (Inter-Faith Commission), the status of Islam.

SMSes going back and forth about Christian conversions and the Azhar Mansor thing. Geo-politically, there are the issues of Palestine, Iran, Israel. Then there were vocal criticisms from Asli (Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute) and Lee Kuan Yew.

There is also the process of more transparency and freedom of the press. All these played on the Malay psyche. If they had not been allowed to release their feelings in a controlled channel, it could have been even worse. We are in control of the situation.

If you look at what happened, there was the opening speech, then the delegates spoke, then I pulled them back on track with my closing speech. It’s not about starting a fire and letting it go out of control. I told them Umno Youth has never been as strong as today and that it has to be translated into strength in the Barisan.

Of course, a few of them got out of control like Shamsul (Najmi), who asked Zam (Information Minister Datuk Zainuddin Maidin) to resign. I was so upset but when I met him the next day, I told him to apologise and Zam had accepted it.

Q. The target seemed to be non-Malays rather than Umno’s political opposition.

A. If you read my speech in detail, you will realise the targets are those who were wrong in their assumptions and arguments such as Asli and Lee Kuan Yew. People tend to look at things from what one, two, three delegates said. You have to also look at the leadership.

I am the leader of Umno Youth. Do I look like somebody out to target the non-Malays? And would I do that intentionally? For what purpose? Pemuda Umno (Umno Youth) is at its strongest. I don’t need that kind of record. We have built up Pemuda to the extent that it is respected. My relationship with the BN Youth is so good. Why would I want to jeopardise it?

Q. But do you have to keep brandishing the keris?

A. What is it about the keris that makes people so uncomfortable? The keris is on the Umno flag. There are two keris on the Umno logo. It is the symbol of Malay culture. It’s not Umno. It’s not Pemuda. You give keris as gifts to non-Malays and non-Malays give them to me at functions. (Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh) Tsu Koon showed me a huge keris during our Penang convention.

Q. Will you carry it again next year?

A. Yes, I will carry it again next year. The keris is here to stay. I told Liow (MCA Youth chief Datuk Liow Tiong Lai), give me your kungfu sword and I will carry it. I am doing it on a question of principle, until people realise the keris is not there to threaten non-Malays but to motivate the Malays. These are all symbols to get Malays to move.

We will do whatever it takes to bring them to a point where they don’t feel they are alienated in their own country. We’ve tried everything and if it can help Malays be more focused on what they can do, then my conscience is clear. I did it for the future. I want non-Malays to understand that our doing this is not to take anything away from anybody. That is also enshrined. Allowing the release will help the stability of the country. It won’t drive off investments.

Q. Is the keris not also symbolic of Malay supremacy?

A. Far from it. Unless I keep going on, every day, every year, people will not get out of thinking about the keris this way. If I can’t do it, I don’t think anybody else can.

If I can’t do it when I’m leading Umno Youth, with Pak Lah (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) as the PM and Najib (Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) as the DPM, when our economy is going strong, and we are rolling out the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP), then when? Wait till our rubber and palm oil prices go down before voicing our fears about apostasy and the IFC? By then people will be hungry; they don’t want to talk anymore.

Q. MCA and Gerakan may lose votes at the expense of Umno releasing tension.

A. We have to get our priorities right. It’s not just about winning elections but building a society and a very complex one that requires strong leadership. We are in it together. Even if Umno wins a lot of seats and the component parties do not win, it is not going to make us happy. We have to deliver as we build up to the elections.

Q. What does all this say about race relations after almost 50 years as a nation?

A. If you were talking to me when I was (Youth and Sports Minister), I’d say we could do it in our lifetime. But now I am more realistic because you get pulled in so many directions. You have to look at things from so many angles. It is very difficult being in a society that is very complex, but there is strength in diversity. If we galvanise that, we have something to offer the world.

Q. There was so much about Malay issues and too little on meritocracy, competitiveness or the push against corruption.

A. It’s all relative. If Dr Mahathir (former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad) had been there, you probably won’t be talking about the keris, or the New Economic Policy. But people expect too much of a three-day gathering. How much more (do) you want to say about fighting corruption? Pak Lah is moving in that direction.

As for meritocracy, Johor Umno has said that we are worried about Malays in the rural areas who cannot get the same level of opportunities in education.

Reducing the gap between rural and urban areas is the right way. As for teaching Mathematics and Science in English, we cannot decide till 2008 even though the Malays and the Chinese don’t want it.

On competitiveness, we are telling them: “Buck up, we’ve got only 14 years (till 2020). Don’t worry about your rights and religion. For now we have to implement the 9MP.” Lecturing them to work harder, telling them they are lazy and corrupt, those days are over. Pak Lah’s approach is different and we have to go with the new leadership.

Q. What did this assembly mean for you personally?

A. This is my eighth assembly. The early part was trying to rebuild the wing (after the sacking of former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim). Morale was so low, some didn’t even want to wear the Pemuda uniform. After eight years of hard work, we have the strength to move on. In my speech, I told them not to look back but to move forward.

Q. Your deputy Khairy Jamaluddin had a controversial run-up to the assembly. How do you think he fared?

A. He did very well. I told him, now that people outside have heard the real grassroots speak in Umno, they are probably thinking that Khairy is not so bad. Yes, he is Oxford material and people expect more of him. But he’s back in Malaysian society and he has to address the concerns of the constituents. An Oxford degree is not going to help if your country is in shambles.

But he will need to prove himself, and if he learns, he’ll get wiser. Sometimes people come back and feel they want to change things. Then you realise it is not so simple and you really sit down and learn. He has learnt a lot but he’s still got a lot more to learn. He’s so lucky he has Pak Lah as his father-in-law.

These are the movies i watched, and i would wanna hentam jh on his view on the devil wears prada....muahahhaa.

The devil wears prada was horrible, boring and unrealistic suitable for girls who fancy chicklit. So jh u're one of them, remember to wear skirt when u come back to U =).

The prestige was really really good xD it might be the few best movies released this year. One of the few movies that u can actually watch alone and keep quiet all day, and it's interesting and provoke thoughts.

Er.. the last one was undercover operation, a typical mafia HK movie that i have no comment on ...

PS. regarding danis's post about me sleeping in the lecture hall, i was just closing my eyes lar!!! i wasn't sleeping u know! i was listening one ler T_T *sob sob*. Just couldnt control my eyelids from dropping =(.

im just curious wat was the last movie u guys watched? and for how much?

within the space of one week i watched 2 super great incredible outstanding awesome wonderful fantastic movies.

1st was devil wears prada( i know im kind of behind on this one but it was so worth my 6 bucks). i seriously cannot understand why people say its girlie or boring. if u dun find it nice then the reason is simple. u did not appreciate the story!
its like dilbert meets sex and the city. I THINK ITS one of the year's classiest, wittiest and most refreshing films. if u like sophie kinsella or marion keyes u will def enjoy this one. if u have no idea wat im babbling about...... then just dun bother watching if u havent done so.

2nd was john tucker must die. this hands down is THE comedy movie of the year. it has to be. (click comes in a close second). i mean this movie is just UNBELIEVABLE. john tucker is like the guy every guy wants to be. and with so many chick flicks in the movie, im telling u this one u cannot miss wei(esp. adrian and vin shen if u both haven seen yet). its non stop laughter from start to end! MUST WATCH! wat makes it sweeter is that I WATCHED IT FOR FREE! my fren who works in tgv got me free seats!! woohooooooo

Lo n behold... i m out of the hospital... haha...

First of all, thanks Joon heng for the post.. haha... how did u know i like comics? =p
Anyway, for those tt din know, haih... i got dengue... Got fever for 5 days n din go off so went for a blood test n found out platelet count was too low... so got admitted immediately....
then started the staying in the hospital nightmare... was on a drip so going to toilet was so so inconvenient... haha... like lugging somebody behind me all the while... din sleep well either.. coz every morning they wake u up so early n say i need to take your blood!!!....haih... so I jumped when doc said can leave... wow!!
So still resting at home now, amidst the Raya hols n everything....
But all is well, feeling better... n just a caution, don't look down on mosquitoes... they took so much of my blood.... (for blood test... haha =))

madeline likes comic books.. unoe... like when u get bitten by a spider and u get cool super powers like spider strength, can sling web and can wear that tight spandex outfit. or get bitten by cats then u get that super agility, can play better basketball than lebron james like halle berry did in catwoman and wear that sexy tight black outfit with a bloody whip.

so one day madeline decided to get bitten by an aedes mosquito, to get super powers( what powers mosquito got la?). but no super powers also.. instead she got denggue, cannot eat cannot drink cannot sleep for 2 days in hospital..

but at least she got abel who flew to her side to be wiff her 24/7=) *this is the part where u all go awwwww* and they say love conquers all even denggue.
the moral of the story is kill mosquitoes, bloodsuckers and get a boyfriend like abel! ~~

Ahhhhh my weeks are sooooo cramped!!! Anatomy is a whole load of info that all these people are pouring down over our heads as if we can absorb it all... I'm sick of names like flexor carpi radialis and ulnaris... :P gonna mati soon if I don't geta break from it all...

It's pretty here when it's not rainy... my room has a view of the River Cam! haha it's a bit of a lousy view but still... better than nothing to have waterfront property right?? :P Haha my college is one of the smaller ones... you want a great place look to Vin Shen and Yi Lun's... Christ's is sooo much larger (and richer) than Magdalene... haha...

My room is... quite a reasonable size actually... but it's drafty even when I close all the windows. Lucky I have an electric heater to warm up the rooom when it gets too bad... I think when winter really comes I'm gonna suffer... :'( I don't like cold... and the library here is freezing... and I don't have textbooks so I have to tahan and sit in the stupid place when I need to refer.... haha my coursemates are starting to comment that I live in the library again... where have I heard that before?? :P

Great to know all you people are still doing fine (presumably)... Look forward to seeing you all whenever/wherever we meet !!!

Man, I can't remember how long it has been since the last time i met yall..feels frus cuz I'm always the last to know about gatherings and stuff *sob*..

Anyway, props to Joon for creating this blog for PM1!! like i care....Lolx jkjk, this is great. Now I don't have to tell Ser yin i've just shat and then have Vin Shen askin me wut i was up to and then SMS Kai Ning to tell her the same thing. xD hakxx!

While u guys are all headin to unis....YES i'm still workin ere in KL *sob* but sall good cuz I guess this is wut i rlly wanna do. Been writing songs for local artists as a start-off point in my music career, arranging vocals, music engineering and recording demos for the past 3 to 4 months. By the way, vocal arrangement simply means putting the best takes together as one. Yea we basically get the artist to record the song or a particular section by looping it for a few times. (sometimes we need to record over 50 takes of one phrase just to get 1 right) And then from the different takes I'd pick the best takes by sections and put em together.

The other day I just arranged Nitta's vocals for a song she did, supposed to be produced and edited by my producer, Siew but he went golfing (damn) so i did all the work and her vocals nearly bored me to death. She should be considered 'great' for being Malaysian Idol 2 first runner-up for God's sake and she doesn't have the least bit of idea in doing the add lips or just ANY simple thrills of which a mediocre Malay singer find easy. WHOA frus-nye. Initially I wanted to guide her to do the add lips by recording mine on top of her straight boring vocals, and then have her to follow thru for the next recording session but then well u noe lah. Her EGO being the 1st runner-up might not allow her to give in to a loser in OIAM or an 18 y/o noob. So i just decided to add like a few effects here and there to make it interesting (cuz she's not goin to have another session so that would be like the final vocal for the song...WURT??) . Then Siew came back from golf and he was like, 'HMMPH...Cindy, u gotta school her i guess..get in the booth(and record)!' So yea had my vocals on top of hers...And DUHHH it finally sounded interesting xD hee hee haa haa

And there was another song I did (composed, wrote em lyrics) with only my vocals in it called 6 Days.. It's an R&B number and my frens who've heard it thought it's rlly good, but I didn't nail it tho cuz the second verse was recorded a few months after the first, and my voice did change noticeably and i just recorded it straight thru for the second verse so it's abit f*cked (to me at least). Is there any way i can post it up here to share it? warning ya it's copyrighted hahahkx no cetak rompaks allowed! Might be selling the song to some artist soon..if we find that someone who an pull it off! (not easy to sing u noe, wah lao eh)

About my studies, ugh....my results for a level are like the stuff u find in ur toilet >.<" stink...and they cant even meet the minimum requirements for most courses. So yea I might be doing Foundation Studies for Applied Photography once i'm mentally prepared to get back to studying. I would probably be doing wut I'm doing now for another 1 yr, but with a better pay and more say. Cuz I'll soon be producing new artists...hee hee. Spice bimbos, cili girls, destiny's kid, Pussycat dogs...u name it! =D Hopefully havin my songs sold in US for a million USD!! Wish me luck, mates... Till then, keep the blog goin fellas. i dont get the chance to go online often, not to mention to write such a friggin long blog >.<"

it's 1am on a monday morning and i just had a fun-filled weekend (thkfully only 1 lecture at 12 today). my timetables can be accessed here(choose M1, tat's my 'group') on top of wat u c on d timetables (s coz it's diff every other week), there are 3 supervisions weekly+another 2mebbe(for medical sociology and intro to the scientific basis of med-both of which are the smaller subs). every1 here (medics esp) are so hardworking n they knoe a lot...tat means more stress for me in keeping up, crap.
This is the geographical position of my college. I'm living on d typewritter building, which u can c when u scroll up north. room's pretty small, but longish(still small :( ) dun bother looking for william's college (girton). it's so far up north west, it took me 45minutes to walk there last evening. btw he's cycling, so let's all hope tat he won't b run over by an old woman in a electronic wheel chair or stg :P
fresher's week here is pretty short-only 4 days and lectures had to begin :( nevertheless there was so much going on, drinking esp! (cheers adrian!) i drank more in my entire 2 weeks here than i did the whole of this yr! alcohol is cheaper than any other drinks n d ppl here drink like crazy. heck, my coll even has a decent bar(william's happens to b nicer, somehow...) weather is rubbish, so freakin cold n my heater is hardly working. lodge report d, d next day someone came n 'fixed' it, d next day not working again, swt...
there's a lot here to keep me distracted frm my anatomy book, like the JCR which is like d undergrad room-it has a pool table, some slot machines, and d adjacent room has a tv and foosball. the MCR (which are for postgrads) has a bar! dammit....
then there's a mini cinema in my coll, just 10 steps frm my room. they show latest films on sundays for classics on thursdays. tickets are abt 2quid but since i'm joining d film society to help out in d technical area and all, i guess i can watch for free :D the other times in my schedule is filled with rowing and playing a lil bsb.

we've just begun our practical anatomy classes this week... quite fun, though the smell is rather... unforgettable. heh... strangely, though, these classes make us really hungry... you can hear stomachs rumble in the dissecting room! you'd think it'd be the other way round... we don't get to dissect, though, not like Cambridge... we just study and play about with cadaveric material that has been dissected for us. :P

I live in a flat with 4 other girls - 2 medics, and 2 psychology students... the psychology students have a 2-day week, i think... at least, it sure seems like that... they throw parties every night in our flat... loads of noise... every day i meet people i've never met before in my flat... especially in the later hours of the night, and unearthly hours of the morning... and today i made a new friend, and when he heard where i'm staying, he was like, "oh, that flat! how many people stay there? I see loads of people going in all the time..." haha...

then 2 nights ago, at about 11 plus, i heard lots of noise in the kitchen... it was REALLY annoying me, cos i was trying to calculate the answer to one of my biochem tutorial questions... so I decided to go out and tell whoever it was off. And when i opened the door, guess what was the first sight that hit me? there was this guy whom i don't know, standing in the kitchen - and hence right in front of my door! - clad in only his undies - red briefs! I nearly fainted... there were a whole group of other guys standing around him, thumping him on the back, and being generally rowdy... they all turned around when i opened the door, and he said "hello..." ... then he went like, oops! and quickly tried to cover himself up with his hands... i was too stunned to speak, so i rolled my eyes and slammed the door... they cleared off after that.... :P

after i'd recovered, and finished my tutorial questions, i ventured out again to get something to eat... and thankfully, this time there was only one of my friends, Rupert, sitting in the kitchen and talking to his girlfriend on Skype... when he saw me, he said, "Sorry... forgot to tell you not to open the door..."
me: "It's okay... do you know them?"
him: "Nope..."
me: "What were they doing?"
him: [shrugs] "No idea..."

this place is so bizarre...

and today i found out that the River Don runs right through Seaton Park, which is right next to the halls of residence where i'm staying... and the river runs right behind our halls! But what really got me was that if you walk through the park, you can get right to the river's edge and dangle your feet in the water... :) :) :) the leaves are just beginning to turn up here... fall has officially begun in Aberdeen! It's a lovely place... roses everywhere... haha... but i'll quit making you jealous now and get back to work... long live PM1!!!!
